Common Goods - Cultures Meet Through Craft

22 FEBRUARY – 31 MARCH 2006

Office of Commonwealth Games Coordination

Curator: Kevin Murray, Craft Victoria

Venue: Melbourne Museum

A Craft Victoria exhibition, Common Goods featured work made in Victoria specially for the Commonwealth Games by artists from South Africa, Malta, Mauritius, Maldives, Sri Lanka, India, Samoa and New Zealand. While in residencies during February 2006, the artists used their traditional skills to produce work from materials at hand, in collaboration with local artists and community. Common Goods encouraged dialogue between cultures and explored different concepts of humanness. The exhibition also contained an indigenous showcase of baskets from south-eastern Australia.
