Festival Melbourne2006, the cultural celebration of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, was Australia’s most diverse festival of arts and culture. Funded by the Victorian and Federal Governments, the free festival featured performing arts, exhibitions, youth, regional and indigenous programs.

The Exhibitions Program was developed and produced by Global Art Projects. Curated to be of broad appeal, the program of 18 exhibitions built partnerships with many of Melbourne’s major art and exhibition venues as well as with independent art curators and project managers, and attracted audiences in excess of 350,000.

The Program highlighted the work of more than 200 artists across a wide range of media including painting, photography, film, sculpture, textiles, traditional and contemporary craft and performance. It also offered the opportunity to bring elements of everyday life in Commonwealth countries into a different context – from Karachi mini-bus decoration applied to a Melbourne tram, to barrel-making from Sri Lanka and the weaving of traditional homes of the Borana people of East Africa.
