3 October 2007 - 5 February 2008

Sofitel Melbourne

WELCOME....Timor Leste was a powerful exhibition of photography acclaimed Australian photographer Ian Provest. The works provided an eye-opening photographic journey into the world's newest nation and Austrlaia's neighbour, East Timor. The exhibition was created to raise awareness of the issues being faced by people living in East Timor, and promote AUSTCARE's peace building and poverty reduction programs.

Provest's photographs depict a side of east Timor not commonly seen, capturing the spirit and hope of the East Timorese people. Included in the exhibition are protraits of Jase Ramos-Horta, Kirst Sword Gusmao and the Australian Ambassador in East Timor, Margaret Twomey.

Provest travelled to East Timor as part of a small supporters group, led by AUSTCARE CEO Michael G Smith AO Major General (Rtd), former Deputy Force Commander of the United National Peacekeeping Force in East Timor. His photographs have a timely international relevance. His work addresses significant humanitarian themes that cross cultural borders and articulate an under-reported viewpoint - the resilience and optimism of the East Timorese people. His work also demonstrates the contribution that art can make towards a better world, showing caring, reflective and humanitarian values.
